(09/04/14) Hello ! We have not been blogging here since Anne Marie’s appearance at the TOMA charity show almost 2 years ago. There are several reasons why, but the main one is that Anne Marie’s official website seemed to be covering everything extremely well and we decided to keep this blog in existence for reference as it is linked to from her site.
However! As she is due to make an exciting trip to London on the weekend of 12 & 13 April, we thought we may as well get blogging again and re-invigorate our UK based promotion of this wonderful singer. Stand by for more posts pics and news !!

ANNE MARIE DAVID
Anne Marie David may have been born in France and possess one of the most beautiful voices in French music but ironically she has spent most of her career performing outside her native land.
She is an artist with many international honours and although she came to prominence in the 1970s, she has a repertoire today as wide as French variety itself.
Her audiences are inevitably charmed by a combination of warmth towards them, the empathy she gives to her material, her charisma and great talent.
BEGINNINGS, HONOURS, RECOGNITION.
The young lady from Arles first came to prominence in Spring 1972 via the stage of Paris’ Theatre National du Palais de Chaillot. She starred as Mary Magdelaine in the premiere of the celebrated French production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her voice was also heard in this role a few years later on the French movie soundtrack to this Rice/Lloyd Webber Rock Opera.
‘72 also saw the launch of France’s 3rd national TV channel. As Anne Marie David had made such an impression, she was chosen by its’ President to be its ideal “Marriane National, a role she was pleased to accept as she played a prominent part in its’ opening night.
Anne Marie’s early success reached new heights in 1973 as she enjoyed her most noteworthy year.
In the February she received huge recognition from the French music industry when awarded the Grand Prix International du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros for her recording of “Aimer”. This prestigious ceremony took place at the Grand Palais des Champs Elysées under the auspices of the Culture Minister Jacques Duhamel.
But why Luxembourg and not France?
Simply a case of quick thinking and action by RTL whose representatives had seen Anne Marie in the Jesus Christ Superstar premiere and immediately asked that she do the honours for them . A similar approach from French TV a few months later therefore had to be politely refused but with a heavy heart non the less.
She would try to score for her own country six years later with the moving “Je Suis L’Enfant Soleil”. Here finishing an honourable 3rd and with her reputation as a great and dignified competitor still intact.
Her winning song was recorded in as many as eight languages as her reputation spread across Europe and beyond. Most success was found in UK, Germany , Scandinavia and particularly Turkey. Albums were subsequently recorded in all these regions.
A string of International honours have been awarded to Anne Marie, including a Grand Prix for Interpretation at Japan’s World Song Festival in the Autumn of 1973.
As a result of success at such events, Anne Marie travelled and performed extensively throughout the next decade and a half.
In fact it was Turkey where she found her biggest successes. A jury of 400 Turkish journalists awarded her the “Oscar International des Variétés” in 1974. This award was presented by His Excellency Fahri Koruturk, President of the Turkish Republic. It was the first time that a French artist had received this honour. Exceptionally, Anne Marie received it again in 1975. She is the only artist in the world to receive it twice!
In the early 80‘s she enjoyed a fruitful phase of her career in Scandinavia. She performed at the Gala Celebration for Eurovision’s 25th anniversary held in Norway and also at the ceremonials for the World Ski Championships in the same country. A further Eurovision connection came through her involvement in Norway’s Melodi GP selection of 1985’s ultimate contest winner “Let it Swing” by Bobbysocks.
A notable appearance was made at Latin America’s most important music festival, held at Vina Del Mar, Chile in 1987. Anne Marie took 3rd place in the competition overall on behalf of France.
A year or so earlier she had demonstrated her virtuosity in “Le Vent Tourbillon”, a musical specifically composed for her by Claude Bolling.
Following the aforementioned Vina del Mar festival, despite a solid reputation and a loyal fan base, she made a big decision to leave the music business and realise some of her dreams that lay in other areas of life.
For 15 years the calls of the stage were resisted but in 2003 they could be resisted no longer . A successful compilation of her “Greatest Hits” was released on CD and she returned to singing- initially with the sole accompaniment of exceptional pianist Philippe Leoge.
She released a stunning Live Album of this show entitled “Live at Charleroi” and made a happy return to performing in Paris during the Spring of 2006.
A year earlier Anne Marie’s considerable contribution to Eurovision history was marked with an appearance at the prestigious 50th anniversary show held in Copenhagen and telecast across Europe.
Between Spring 2007 and Autumn 2008 Anne Marie was involved, along with partner David Gerard, in the inception and development of Radio Montaillou, a local radio station broadcasting from studios based some 1400m above sea level in the Pyrénées Ariégeoises. She presented a daytime show called “ Laissez passer la Chanson “ during which she interviewed many notable artists and played a wide variety of both French and international music.

Yes friends! 2008 marked the 35th anniversary of Luxembourg’s finest victory at the ESC.
Of course, as most devotees will be aware, Tu te Reconnaitras is statistically the best ever entry to the Grand Prix. Not by subsequent record sales (although one day I will work out the total world wide sales ) but in terms of percentage of votes available on the night it comes out on top, just edging out Save Your Kisses by Brotherhood of Man from 1976. Whats more, it’s a record unlikely to be broken as modern day televoting tends to spread out the numbers more evenly. So its another reason why Anne Marie David and this extraordinary song tend to stand out among the list of more memorable winners. I don’t think there is much doubt either that her (typical) give it 100% approach got the message across well and truly on the night. A quality (I am pleased to say) she still has in spades.

And yet, come the ESC 50th anniversary celebrations in Copenhagen (October 2005) Tu te Reconnaitras was notable by its absence. This despite the gracious participation of Ms. David. I would love to know what she thought about that!
I think I’m right in saying that in the show as broadcast (interestingly not shown by the BBC) Anne Marie does briefly appear performing a slightly “cabaret” version of “Apres Toi”, the 1972 winner originally sung by Vicki Leandros also for Luxembourg. Those crazy EBU producers! what will they think of next!?
I cannot help thinking they missed a great opportunity to air the first Europe-wide performance of their “best” winning song by its true owner. To make matters worse, it didn’t figure among the top 15 eurovision songs televoted in during the programme but who is to say what kind of shortlist the (almost certainly) fairly young televoters were presented with.
On a more positive note, the ever increasing posts of the clips showing the original , preview and reprise performances by Anne Marie on “youtube”, and many other video clip internet sites draw nothing but generally swooning comments. Reassuringly, many of these comments come from people not even born in ’73 and that backs up my feeling that Messrs. Morgan and Buggy really came up with a number that will continue to play well for many a year.
It’s a bit of a shame however, that for the English and German language releases, new lyrics (that seem to have been hurridly knocked up) were used and what seems a genuinely touching tribute when sung in French (or indeed Spanish) ends up coming across as a rather simple song. Still, never mind !!! Long Live YouTube!!!!!!
